Tips For Unlocking Student Aid
Step 1: FAFSA® Form
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) is your key for federal grants and student loans. To apply, first create your Federal Student Aid (FSA ID). This is required prior to completing the FAFSA® Form. Set up your FSA ID and once the ID number arrives, complete the new, faster FAFSA® Form. The form qualifies you for federal financial aid and may be used to determine eligibility for scholarships. Note: Students who are eligible to complete the FAFSA® must do so to be eligible for State aid.

Step 2: MHEC One-App
The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) is the state agency that coordinates and administers State financial aid programs for Maryland students, including those who may be eligible for State aid as undocumented students.
Create a Maryland College Aid Processing System (MDCAPS) account at mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us to gain access to the One-App and explore different State financial aid options.
Step 3: University Aid
Visit usmd.edu/institutions/finaid/resources to be taken to a list of all universities within the University System of Maryland, along with contact information for their financial aid offices.
